Youth unemployment remains a significant challenge in South Africa, with the unemployment rate among individuals aged 15 to 34 standing at 45.5% in the first quarter of 2024, notably higher than the national average of 32.9%. This disparity underscores the pressing need for effective interventions to equip young people with the skills and opportunities necessary for sustainable employment or entrepreneurship. Recognising this, Nepoworx embarked on a transformative programme in 2024 in partnership with Harambee, focusing on training and work readiness in the renewable energy sector. As a result, 30 of the 100 young individuals have successfully transitioned into the workforce and are now gaining on-the-job experience, marking a significant milestone in youth development.

Prolonged unemployment among youth leads to various adverse effects, including increased poverty, gender-based violence, social exclusion, and mental health challenges. The lack of job opportunities not only hampers individual growth but also stifles community development, perpetuating cycles of inequality and poverty already disadvantaged townships.

In response to these challenges, organizations like Nepoworx, in collaboration with Harambee, have developed targeted programs aimed at enhancing youth employability and increase youth entrepreneurship. One such initiative is the Solar PV Work Readiness Programme, which provides participants with comprehensive training in solar photovoltaic (PV) systems. Upon completion, participants receive a PV GreenCard, certifying their qualification as solar installers.

Consider the journey of Elvis, a young resident from a local township in the Vaal, Gauteng. Before joining the Harambee Work Readiness Programme, Elvis explored various avenues to secure a livelihood. He undertook different jobs and enrolled in multiple programs, all of which led to dead ends. Demonstrating entrepreneurial spirit, he also ventured into selling clothes to make ends meet while also working with his dad in his business as an assistant electrician.

Elvis’s turning point came when he enrolled in the Solar PV Work Readiness Programme offered by Nepoworx. Through this program, he acquired valuable skills in solar PV installation and earned his PV GreenCard certification. This achievement opened the door to a 12-month internship, providing him with practical work experience and a pathway to sustainable employment. “Before this opportunity, I was constantly searching for something that would give me a real chance at a future. Nepoworx and Harambee didn’t just give me skills—they gave me confidence, direction, and the chance to build a career in an industry that’s growing.” Said Elvis.

Elvis’s story is a testament to the effectiveness of targeted skills development programs in addressing youth unemployment. By focusing on sectors with growth potential, such as renewable energy, and providing comprehensive training and certification, initiatives like those led by Nepoworx and Harambee are making a tangible difference in the lives of young South Africans.

Addressing youth unemployment in South Africa requires a multifaceted approach that combines skills development, practical experience, and industry-recognized certification. Programs like the Solar PV Work Readiness Programme not only equip young people with valuable skills but also empower them to contribute meaningfully to their communities, fostering economic growth and social development within townships.
